Abu Dhabi Court Annuls Sale of Tampered Vehicle Over Odometer Fraud
An Abu Dhabi court recently set a firm precedent against automotive fraud by nullifying a vehicle sale contract after discovering the odometer had been intentionally manipulated. The legal dispute arose when a buyer purchased a car for Dh215,000, only to discover later that the mileage had been rolled back by over 68,000 kilometers. After the sellers—a woman and her son—refused to refund the purchase price, the buyer turned to the Al Ain Civil, Commercial and Administrative Court to seek justice.
A court-appointed expert confirmed that the mileage tampering was a hidden defect, undetectable during standard inspections. While the court ordered the sellers to return the full Dh215,000 and reclaim the vehicle, they denied the buyer’s additional request for Dh35,000 in damages, citing a lack of concrete evidence regarding specific financial or moral harm. The ruling serves as a clear warning to sellers, reinforcing the UAE’s strict stance on transparency in the pre-owned vehicle market.
