UAE Media Officials Warn Against Irresponsible Online Conduct
The UAE National Media Authority has issued a stern reminder regarding the legal ramifications of irresponsible behavior on digital platforms. Dr. Jamal Mohammed Al Kaabi, the Secretary General, highlighted that UAE media laws are comprehensive, covering everything from public broadcasts to private family WhatsApp groups. Ignorance is no excuse for legal transgressions, and officials have emphasized that any content deemed harmful to public order, religious values, or national symbols can lead to severe consequences, including significant fines, account termination, and imprisonment.
The authority has cited several high-profile examples to illustrate where boundaries have been crossed, ranging from the commercial exploitation of the national currency and the mockery of traditional Emirati attire to the unauthorized filming of law enforcement officers. Furthermore, the spread of fabricated news—such as the infamous, entirely fictional story about a family dying from COVID-19—has resulted in actual jail time for those involved. In a massive crackdown on digital misinformation and harmful AI-generated content, authorities have already removed 10,000 TikTok accounts. Ultimately, the government’s goal is not to suppress expression, but to safeguard the nation’s cultural identity and protect its residents from the real-world dangers of unchecked digital influence.
