UAE urges UN intervention following regional security threats and attacks on critical infrastructure
During a recent UN Security Council open debate on civilian protection, the UAE’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Ghasaq Shaheen, issued a stark warning regarding the ongoing instability in the Strait of Hormuz. Highlighting Iran’s persistent disregard for UNSC Resolution 2817, Shaheen emphasized that these provocations jeopardize global economic security and international navigation. She challenged the Council to move beyond rhetoric, questioning how the body intends to maintain its credibility and ensure the enforcement of its own mandates in the face of continued violations.
These calls for urgent action follow a tense week for the UAE, marked by a drone strike near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra region. While officials confirmed that the attack on an external generator resulted in no injuries or radiation leaks, the UAE has demanded that the Security Council condemn the targeting of peaceful nuclear facilities as a blatant breach of international law. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been monitoring the site closely, confirming that radiation levels remain normal and that operations are being stabilized, while echoing the sentiment that nuclear installations must never be compromised by military aggression.
