The High Cost of a Social Media Comment: Ajman Police Launch ‘Remote Bail’ Service
A UAE resident’s return from a recent trip took an unexpected turn when she was detained at the airport for an outstanding police complaint originating in Ajman. While her family was cleared to proceed, she was taken into custody overnight and transferred to the emirate to face charges stemming from an Instagram comment. The incident began when she criticized a friend's bag as a "knockoff" online; the remark triggered a wave of mockery and bullying from other users, eventually leading the post's owner to file a formal complaint. Although the situation was eventually resolved through reconciliation, it serves as a stark reminder that even seemingly harmless social media activity can lead to serious legal consequences under the UAE's strict cybercrime laws, which include heavy fines and potential imprisonment.
In response to such incidents, the Ajman Police have introduced a "Remote Bail" service as part of their Zero Bureaucracy Program to make legal procedures more efficient. By coordinating with the Public Prosecution, the authorities can now grant bail electronically for minor offenses, or misdemeanors, sparing individuals from unnecessary detention. Officials are using this case to warn the public about the legal risks associated with online bullying and derogatory comments. With penalties for cyber-related offenses reaching up to Dh500,000, authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and remain mindful of their digital footprint to avoid similar legal entanglements.
