Crisis Within Amma: Kerala’s Film Actors’ Association in Turmoil
The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (Amma) is currently grappling with a massive leadership crisis following the mass resignation of its 17-member executive committee. Led by Shweta Menon, the committee stepped down after facing a no-confidence motion during a heated general body meeting in Kochi. Menon, who had served as the association's first female president, publicly condemned the environment within the organization, claiming that the leadership was being pressured to act as "puppets" and alleging that certain figures were attempting to consolidate power for questionable interests. This leadership collapse, which also saw the departure of veteran actors like Mallika Sukumaran and Lakshmipriya, marks a low point for the body, which has been under significant public scrutiny since the release of the Hema Committee report.
The discord was primarily ignited by disputes over financial transparency, with prominent members including Siddique, Edavela Babu, and Jagadish highlighting significant lapses in the committee's reporting. As tensions reached a breaking point, an ad-hoc committee led by actor and MLA Ramesh Pisharody was quickly formed to restore order and manage the association’s operations. While the state government has opted to stay out of the situation, labeling it an internal matter, the ongoing instability highlights the deep-rooted friction within the Malayalam film industry. With superstar Mohanlal calling for unity, the organization now faces the difficult challenge of regaining credibility and addressing the systemic issues that have led to this wave of high-profile resignations.
