Abu Dhabi Court Issues Heavy Fine for Abusive WhatsApp Voice Note
An Abu Dhabi criminal court has imposed a Dh30,000 fine on a woman after she sent a derogatory WhatsApp voice note to a former colleague. In addition to the fine, the court ordered her to pay Dh21,000 in temporary compensation. The legal proceedings were triggered when the defendant, frustrated by unanswered phone calls, lashed out at her friend using offensive language. Although the sender claimed the message was merely a momentary emotional reaction and denied any malicious intent, the court ruled that the explicit content of the audio recording constituted a clear violation of UAE cybercrime laws.
This ruling highlights the critical importance of digital decorum and serves as a stark reminder that personal relationships do not exempt individuals from legal accountability. Despite the defendant's surprise that a private dispute escalated into a criminal matter, the court prioritized the documented evidence over her personal justifications. Authorities continue to urge residents to remain mindful of their digital conduct, emphasizing that impulsive messages on communication platforms are treated as formal evidence that can lead to significant financial and legal repercussions.
