Tragedy Strikes Salamis: Two Dead as Major Wildfires Force Mass Evacuations
A devastating series of wildfires broke out on the Greek island of Salamis this Sunday, leading to the tragic loss of two lives and triggering mass evacuations. The fires erupted nearly simultaneously in the popular coastal areas of Peristeria and Selinia, quickly spreading through inhabited regions. Authorities confirmed that the bodies of two victims were recovered from the Peristeria beach area as emergency crews scrambled to move hundreds of residents and tourists to safety.
In a massive coordinated effort to contain the flames, the Greek fire department deployed over 200 personnel, dozens of fire engines, and a fleet of 13 aircraft to battle the inferno. The coastguard also stepped in, dispatching patrol boats and coordinating with private ferries to assist in the urgent evacuations. As local officials work to prevent the fires from merging, this incident adds to a troubling summer of wildfires in Greece, which have been exacerbated by intense, uncharacteristic winds throughout the region.
