Iranian Drones Strike Top Kurdistan Officials' Residences
Local authorities in Iraqi Kurdistan reported that two Iranian drones were launched across the border on Monday, targeting both the prime minister’s office and the residence of the region's intelligence chief. Kurdistan Prime Minister Masrour Barzani condemned the strikes as a significant escalation and a direct threat to the stability of the autonomous region. Fortunately, officials from the regional Counter-Terrorism Directorate confirmed that the explosive-laden Hadid-110 drones caused no casualties during the overnight assault.
This incident marks a continuation of the persistent tensions between Tehran and the Kurdistan region, which has seen over 1,000 strikes by Iran and its affiliated militias since the onset of the current conflict in the Middle East. Iran frequently accuses Kurdish opposition groups based in the area of collaborating with Western and Israeli interests, often using these claims to justify military actions despite previous ceasefire agreements. While these groups have largely abandoned their formal camps, the region remains a volatile focal point for drone attacks targeting US personnel and local leadership.
