Rare Autoimmune Mystery: Abu Dhabi Resident Diagnosed with Ultra-Rare Condition
A 34-year-old Abu Dhabi man recently faced a terrifying health ordeal after suffering from an persistent, high-grade fever for over two weeks. Despite repeated hospital visits and extensive diagnostic testing, his condition continued to deteriorate, marked by debilitating joint pain, exhaustion, and signs of liver inflammation. Doctors at Burjeel Hospital Abu Dhabi eventually identified the cause as Adult-Onset Still's Disease (AOSD), an incredibly rare autoimmune disorder that impacts only one to four people in every million. Because the symptoms frequently mirror those of infections, cancers, or other autoimmune issues, the condition is notoriously difficult to pinpoint.
The medical team noted that the patient’s case was particularly complex because he lacked many of the classic indicators typically associated with the illness. However, a significant spike in his ferritin levels—a protein that serves as a marker for severe inflammation—provided the breakthrough clinicians needed. After beginning an aggressive regimen of high-dose corticosteroids, the patient experienced a swift recovery, with his fever breaking within a single day. While he has since regained his mobility and energy, he will remain under the close supervision of rheumatology and internal medicine specialists to manage the risk of the condition returning.
