Protecting Your Child: Expert Advice on Navigating Online Scams

Sun, Jun 21, 2026(2h ago)UAE

With children increasingly targeted by cybercriminals through gaming apps, social media, and messaging platforms, UAE experts are calling for a proactive approach to digital safety. Even devices without SIM cards are no longer secure, as scammers exploit Wi-Fi-connected services to groom or manipulate minors. Experts emphasize that technology, such as parental controls, is only one piece of the puzzle. The most effective defense remains open communication; parents are urged to teach their children a simple but vital rule: "Stop, don't respond, and tell your parents." By fostering an environment where children feel comfortable sharing their online experiences without fear of losing their devices, families can build a critical layer of protection against grooming, financial extortion, and identity theft.

Beyond personal vigilance, the UAE has implemented some of the world's most rigorous legal safeguards to protect youth from digital harm. Under Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021, those convicted of exploiting children online face severe consequences, including lengthy prison terms and fines reaching up to Dh5 million. While legal frameworks provide a strong deterrent, experts also highlight the need for "safety-by-design" features from tech companies to prevent unknown adults from easily contacting children. Ultimately, child safety in the digital age is a collective responsibility that requires a combination of constant family dialogue, the use of restricted privacy settings on apps, and a zero-tolerance approach toward cybercrime by both the public and the state.
