Dubai Boosts Public Transit Efficiency with Massive Expansion of Dedicated Bus Lanes

Sun, Jun 21, 2026(2h ago)UAE

Commuters in Dubai can look forward to significantly faster travel times as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) pushes forward with its latest expansion of dedicated bus and taxi lanes. Currently 30 percent complete, this 14.5km infrastructure project targets six high-traffic streets, including Al Nahda, Naif, and Al Satwa. Once finished, the city’s network of exclusive transit lanes will grow to 20.6km. Projections indicate that peak-hour travel times could plummet by as much as 59 percent, while bus arrival reliability is expected to see a major boost of up to 56 percent, making public transport a much more attractive alternative to driving.

This initiative follows the success of previous phases that streamlined bus schedules and increased overall satisfaction among riders and drivers alike. To ensure the system remains efficient, the RTA has marked these lanes with a distinct red color, and motorists are reminded that unauthorized use of these areas carries a Dh600 fine. By cutting travel times and enhancing reliability, officials believe the project will encourage a 30 percent jump in bus ridership, ultimately creating a more sustainable and fluid transportation ecosystem for the city’s residents and visitors.
