Delhi and Uttarakhand Police Dismantle Helicopter Ticket Scam Targeting Kedarnath Pilgrims
Authorities in India have launched a crackdown on a sophisticated cybercrime ring that has been swindling pilgrims traveling to the sacred Kedarnath shrine. Scammers have been masquerading as legitimate helicopter service providers, luring unsuspecting devotees—including NRIs—with fake travel packages priced as high as Rs100,000. These criminals operate by creating fraudulent websites and sending counterfeit e-tickets via WhatsApp and email. The scam recently gained national attention after a government official and a retiree from Hyderabad were defrauded of significant sums, only to be turned away at the helipad when their tickets were identified as illegitimate.
In response, a joint task force involving Delhi and Uttarakhand police, alongside the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, tracked the perpetrators to hideouts in Bihar. While several arrests have been made, officials are urging travelers to exercise extreme caution and strictly utilize the official Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority website for bookings. Meanwhile, with the onset of the monsoon season, authorities have officially suspended all helicopter operations for the Chardham Yatra. Officials have advised pilgrims that for the remainder of the season, they must rely on traditional transport methods like mules, ponies, or palanquins to reach the high-altitude shrines.
