Rising Concerns: Over 1,000 Accidents Involving Delivery Bikes in Dubai
Despite the implementation of stricter traffic regulations and increased enforcement, Dubai saw a surge in accidents involving delivery motorcycles in 2025, with figures climbing to over 1,000 incidents compared to 854 the previous year. Dubai Police also reported issuing nearly 80,000 traffic citations to riders, highlighting a persistent safety gap. While speed is often blamed, authorities and analysts point to a more nuanced reality: human error. Frequent issues like sudden lane changes, failures to check blind spots, and drivers not signaling properly are major contributors to these collisions. Brigadier Juma Salem bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic, emphasized that the vulnerability of motorcycles in congested traffic makes mutual vigilance essential for both riders and motorists.
To combat this, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has restricted delivery bikes from using far-left fast lanes on major highways, backed by fines of up to Dh700 and potential permit suspensions for repeat offenders. However, safety experts warn that enforcement alone is insufficient. Because delivery riders face immense pressure to meet delivery windows, and motorists often struggle to spot smaller vehicles in heavy traffic, the solution requires a shift in road culture. Achieving long-term safety will depend on a combination of enhanced defensive driving training for riders and greater awareness among the general public regarding blind spots and spatial sharing, ensuring that the convenience of delivery services doesn't come at the cost of lives.
