68-Year-Old Cancer Survivor Cycles 3,333km to Inspire Hope
Guido De Wilde, a 68-year-old stage 4 colon cancer survivor, is currently leading a 15-member team on an epic 3,333km journey from Barcelona to Paris. Known as "Cycle Against Cancer," this 25-day charity expedition aims to raise vital funds for the Al Jalila Foundationâs cancer care initiatives in the UAE. For De Wilde, the grueling rideâwhich involves over 54,000 meters of elevationâis about much more than athletic endurance. Having faced his own terminal diagnosis in 2020, he views the challenge as a powerful message to those currently battling the disease: that a diagnosis does not define the end of one's journey and that there is always a path forward.
The mission is deeply personal for every rider on the team, many of whom are cycling in honor of loved ones lost to the illness or to support those currently in treatment. De Wilde credits his own recovery to the resilience he found on a bike, noting that he continued training on a virtual system even throughout his chemotherapy. By tackling difficult terrain and intentional hardships, the team hopes to mirror the strength shown by patients every single day. As they push toward Paris, each kilometer serves as a testament to the fact that with enough grit and collective support, even the most daunting battles can be overcome.
