UAE Teens Swap Summer Camps for Professional Lifeguard and Coaching Training

Wed, Jul 8, 2026(2h ago)UAE

Instead of spending their summer holidays at traditional camps, a growing number of teenagers in the UAE are opting for a more professional path by training to become swimming assistants and certified safety responders. Programmes offered by institutions like the Urban Training Centre and Urban Swim Academy allow students as young as 14 to gain hands-on experience in pool safety, first aid, and instructional techniques. By participating in these structured courses, teens not only build essential leadership and communication skills but also earn globally recognized certifications—such as the STA Aquatic Helper Certificate and various first aid credentials—that provide a significant head start for those interested in future careers in fitness or aquatic education.

This initiative acts as a vital stepping stone, bridging the gap between recreational swimming and formal professional qualifications. By shadowing experienced coaches and assisting with lessons, these young participants develop the confidence and technical understanding needed to eventually pursue full teaching certifications once they turn 16. Beyond the immediate skill-building, these qualifications—some of which carry UCAS points—can be a major asset for university applications and part-time employment opportunities. Academy leaders have noted that the programme fosters a sense of responsibility and accountability, while the younger students they teach often find the relatable, young instructors to be both inspiring and approachable role models in the water.
