Dubai Police Issues Stern Warning Against Promoting Counterfeit Goods
Dubai authorities have issued a critical warning to social media users and online business owners regarding the dangers of advertising or selling counterfeit goods. Many young influencers and content creators are being lured by suspicious offers from anonymous parties, mistakenly viewing the promotion of fake luxury items—such as watches, perfume, and clothing—as an easy way to make extra money. Law enforcement officials emphasized that this activity is not a harmless side hustle but a direct violation of the UAE’s Federal Law No. 36 of 2021, which protects intellectual property and trademark rights.
Major Omar Hassan Nasser, Director of the Anti-Economic Crimes Department, stressed that ignorance of the law provides no legal defense. Even if an individual is unaware that the products they are promoting are fake, they can still face severe legal consequences for participating in these illicit schemes. Beyond the legal risks, engaging in this trade damages one's personal reputation, destroys follower trust, and negatively impacts the local economy. To avoid these pitfalls, influencers and e-commerce operators are urged to perform thorough due diligence, verify the legitimacy of their suppliers, and ensure that all business operations are supported by valid legal licenses and official documentation.
